Why do I need copy editing? I’ve got a grammar checker on my computer.

A grammar checker is unlikely to catch all grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. Did you mean “tale” when you wrote “tail”? Did you leave out a word in sentence? Did you refer to Rose as “he” because you missed out the “s” by accident? Does your grammar checker know whether you mean “her kids’ supper” or “her kid’s supper”? Then there is capitalization, the use of periods, commas and semicolons, as well as the correct use of quotes, and many other issues.

I can’t handle a lot of criticism; will an edit crush my ego?

Anyone who brings their book project to a conclusion is already a winner. We’ll help you make it an even better book. We won’t hold back, but we’ll always keep the feedback constructive, helping you to address any shortcomings and providing concrete suggestions for improvement. What do I need to get my manuscript published?

Once your manuscript is edited, you’re well on the way to publication.

If you’re self-publishing, you’ll need:

  • Formatting. We can format your book/e-book for you.
  • A cover (e.g., from our partner WordSugar Designs).
  • A description for the back of the book/sales page. We can edit your description or write one for you.
  • A publishing platform. We can publish your book/e-book to Amazon.

If you’re submitting your manuscript to publishers or agents, you’ll need:

  • The first few (edited) chapters from your manuscript.
  • A synopsis, i.e., a 1-2 page summary of the plot.
  • A cover letter.

We can edit the synopsis and cover letter for you, or write them from scratch.

Do I keep the copyright of my manuscript?

Provided the work is original, anything you write is automatically copyright protected. The copyright remains yours regardless of any changes our editors may make to your document. For more information about copyright protection, we refer you to this FAQ by the United States Copyright Office.

What is your turnaround time?

Our standard turnaround time for a single round of editing is three weeks. If your manuscript is longer than 100,000 words, or has complex editing requirements, we may need a little more time. We’ll notify you of this in advance. For manuscripts shorter than 30,000 words, the edit can usually be completed sooner.

If you have a tight deadline and need a faster turnaround time, we can usually accommodate this, but we may need to add a surcharge to the fee.

How can I send you my manuscript?

You can send us your manuscript in the following ways:

  • as an attachment to an email,
  • via the Upload File button in the contact form,
  • for large files, use WeTransfer and enter info@bookhelpline.com in the email field

For the developmental editing service, you can send us your manuscript either in Word or PDF format. For all other services we work with Word documents only.

How can I pay you?

Fees can be paid via PayPal using the button on our payments page. Note that you don’t need to have a PayPal account to make a payment through PayPal, debit/credit card payments are also accepted.

If you wish to pay in installments, we would be happy to carry out the edit in blocks of 20,000 words.
